La tragedia di un uomo ridicolo

Il figlio di Primo Spaggiari, industriale caseario, viene rapito. Al padre viene chiesto un cospicuo riscatto, così si trova nell’incertezza se vendere il caseificio o meno. Per fortuna il figlio ritorna a casa sano e salvo, ma i dubbi sulla sua vicenda non sono risolti.

Bertolucci si rispecchia nel personaggio interpretato da Tognazzi: ha un binocolo in mano e scruta l’orizzonte della pianura padana. Cerca di vedere chiaro, ma in realtà non riesce a interpretare gli eventi. Il film si riferisce ad aspetti più generali, sul piano sociale e politico, come il periodo di incertezza storica attraversato dall’Italia dopo la stagione del terrorismo.

Primo Spaggiari’s son is kidnapped. The father, a dairy farmer, is asked for a large ransom, so he is uncertain whether to sell his dairy or not. Fortunately, the son returns home safely, but doubts about his story are not resolved.

Bertolucci reflects himself in the character played by Tognazzi: he has binoculars in his hand and scrutinizes the horizon of the Po Valley. He tries to see clearly, but he can’t really interpret events. The film refers to the more general social and political aspects of contemporary life in Italy, such as the period of historical uncertainty that Italy went through after the terrorist years of the 1970s.
