Temistocle Orimbelli vive in una splendida villa sul lago Maggiore, con una moglie che non ama e una giovane cognata – il cui marito è dato per disperso in guerra – molto attraente. La presenza di un giovane ospite alla villa ridesta in Temistocle passioni sopite e mette in luce tutta la sua meschinità.

Tratto dal celebre romanzo di Piero Chiara, il film fa emergere lo squallore del protagonista – ben interpretato da Tognazzi – dalle superfici morbide del lago, che gli conferiscono un’atmosfera decadente. La presenza di Ornella Muti accresce indubbiamente il fascino del film.

Temistocle Orimbelli lives in a beautiful villa on Lake Maggiore, with a wife he doesn’t love and a young and charming sister-in-law – whose husband is reported missing in the war. The presence of a young guest at the villa awakens in Themistocles dormant passions.

Based on the famous novel by Piero Chiara, the film brings out the squalor of the protagonist – well played by Tognazzi – and is set within a decadent atmosphere. The presence of Ornella Muti undoubtedly increases the charm of the film.
