Tratto dal romanzo La spartizione di Piero Chiara, il film tratteggia la figura di un personaggio laido, calcolatore e disgustoso. Tognazzi riesce a incarnare con grande precisione la mediocrità del protagonista.

Based on the novel La spartizione by Piero Chiara, the film portrays the figure of a petty, calculating character. Tognazzi manages to embody, with great precision, the mediocrity of the protagonist.
